Cambodia is dominated by the Mekong river. It floods in the rainy
season from May to October, providing the fine rice growing land. Cambodia, known to its
own people as Kampuchea, was overrun in the 6th century AD by the Khmer tribe
from the north, whose empire flourished until about 1450 and created the great Buddhist
temple of Angkor Wat. Who built Angkor Wat? Cambodians like to let mysteries lie, but may
be they dont know themselves. Perhaps its not even human work. To Cambodians
Angkor is more than a symbol, more than just the shape of a temple and its towers on the
flag of the Kingdom. It was abandoned in the 15th century before being
rediscovered a century later. Angkor Wat is the main attraction of the visit.
